The Ruins of St. Mary's Abbey

Founded in 1055, York's Benedictine abbey was substantially destroyed in 1539 during King Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries.  In 1929 it was described by E. Ridsdale Tate, a British antiquary, as a "venerable pile in the evening of its glory."
