Today we toured the Chelsea home of the 19th century literary couple, Thomas & Jane Carlyle. Quite famous in their time, many a Victorian celebrity, including Dickens, Tennyson & Browning, came visiting here. Thomas, known as the "Sage of Chelsea", was an influential essayist & historian, and Jane is now recognized as one of the best letter writers in the English language. Their home has been open to the public since the late 1800's and contains much of the Carlyles' original possessions. The Carlyles came to London, from Scotland, in 1834 and rented this house, which was already over 125 years old, for 35 pounds a year! They stayed for the rest of their lives.
