Quelques premières impressions ...

C'est très intéressant ici. Je ne peux pas m'empêcher de comparer Londres à San Francisco. San Francisco est magnifique géographiquement et architecturalement, mais les rues sont souvent sales. De nombreuses personnes souffrant de graves problèmes mentaux se promènent partout. Il y a des sans-abri qui dorment dehors chaque nuit. Quand on quitte sa maison le matin, on s'attend à rencontrer des situations offensives pendant la journée. Je suis à Londres depuis seulement une semaine et je suis surpris de ce que je vois. Cependant, je reste dans "West London" et je ne connais que "West London" et "Central London." Voilà ce que je vois. Les rues sont très propres. Les gens sont bien habillés. Il y a peu de magasins vacants. Tous les magasins sont très agréables et accueillants. Il y a des restaurants et des cafés partout. La quantité et la variété des plats disponibles sont à couper le souffle (take one's breath away). Par contre, la circulation est terrible. Les piétons n'ont pas la priorité. Il faut risquer sa vie en traversant la rue. C'est absolument fou et dangereux. San Francisco est devenue plus peuplée au cours de la dernière décennie, mais Londres est tellement peuplée. Il n'y a pas d'espace public personnel. C'est incroyable! Tout l'ouest et le centre de Londres ont l'air chic, cher, beau. Voici quelques premières impressions de cette magnifique ville.

13 December, 2019: Today we stopped in at Leighton House Museum, a 15 minute walk from our flat.  It was the home and work-studio of Lord Frederick Leighton (1830-1896), a British painter whose work often depicted Biblical and classical themes. Work started on his house in 1864 and it now a museum.

While we were at the museum and having tea and scones afterwards at a local café, Luna was, as usual, taking an afternoon nap. .

11 décembre, 2019: Aujourd'hui, nous sommes allés à Barnes, un quartier de Londres qui, sans tout le trafic, ressemblerait à un paisible village anglais. Il pleuvait et nous avons mis beaucoup de boue sur nos chaussures en explorant la région. Nous avons vu la maison d'Henry Fielding, auteur de Tom Jones, publié pour la première fois en 1749. Le roman est une présentation de la vie et du caractère anglais au milieu du XVIIIe siècle. Henry Fielding est parfois appelé le père du roman anglais. Nous avons visité un cimetière victorien et de très vieilles églises. L'expédition s'est terminée par une visite au sanctuaire du "rock god" Marc Bolan. En 1977, il est tué dans un accident de voiture à Barnes, tout près de son domicile. Le soir, nous sommes allés à Oxford Street pour voir les lumières de Noël. Il y avait tellement de gens qui se promenaient. Je n'ai jamais rien vu de tel! Nous avons mangé à Ethos, un restaurant végétarien et c'était, comme chaque repas que nous avons pris ici, très bon.

Friday, December 10, 2019, Eddie and I went to "Christmas with the Royal Society" at the Royal Albert Hall.   Prince Albert who first envisioned this building, unfortunately never lived to see it. He died in 1861, at the age of 42; the Hall opened in 1871. Eddie bought tickets for the "rausing circle" section; however, once we sat down my fear of heights forbade me from occupying the seats and we scurried down to the box office to exchange the tickets.  We missed the singing of "God Save the Queen," but found our new seats in the front row of the "Stalls," with an excellent view of the stage. The concert was very British, intended for a strictly British audience, with British carols and references to British culture, politics and geography.  We then walked home to Kensington, along Hyde Park.  Prince Albert's cause of death is an issue still parleyed among some. Said to have died of Typhoid Fever, others have suggested other causes, exacerbated by stress.  At the time of his death, he had nine children and was said to be upset that one of his sons was intimately involved with an Irish actress. Queen Victoria wore black for 40 years after his death. This jewel box is a wonderful legacy of their reign.
