Knebworth House in Hertfordshire has been the home of the Lytton family since its late 15th century origins. Its most notable resident was Victorian novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1803-1873) who wrote The Last Days of Pompeii and coined such famous phrases as "it was a dark and stormy night", "the pen is mightier than the sword", "pursuit of the almighty dollar", and "the great unwashed".
