Stonehenge

Probably the best-known prehistoric monument in Europe, Stonehenge sits on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire and consists of standing stones each weighing around 25 tons.

Old Sarum

Old Sarum was an imposing Iron Age hill fort and then a Norman castle built by William the Conqueror.  It was also the site of Salisbury's original cathedral.  Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife of King Henry II, was imprisoned at Old Sarum when she supported their sons against him.
