Knole House

Knole House is located in Sevenoaks, a pleasant town about 20 minutes southeast of London by train from London Bridge Station.  Built in the mid 1400's, the house came under the ownership of the Sackville family in the early 1600's and assorted family members have occupied it until the present day.  Some notable 20th century Sackvilles include writer Vita Sackville-West, paramour of writer Virginia Woolf who used the history of Knole House as inspiration for her novel Orlando, and Vita's cousin Eddy Sackville-West, a flamboyant music critic.  One of England's 5 largest homes, Knole has 365 rooms and 52 staircases!
