Freud House

Sigmund Freud arrived in London from Vienna in 1938, fleeing the Nazis.  He lived only one year in London, dying in 1939 at the age of 83 years, just weeks after the launch of WWII.  Four of his five sisters that he left behind in Vienna were murdered in Nazi concentration camps. Today we toured the impressive West Hampstead house where the founder of psychoanalysis lived and died.  It's a spacious and hospitable home, with a lovely private back garden. Freud had a lot of his books, art and furniture brought to London and the rooms were made to resemble his apartment in Vienna.  In his office is the famous couch where all who underwent psychoanalysis reclined, as well as the day bed upon which he died.  Freud's youngest child, his daughter Anna, also a psychoanalyst, stayed on at the property with her partner Dorothy for 40 years.  Anna Freud, famous in her own right, passed away in 1982 and bequeathed the house for use as a museum dedicated to her famous father and his family.
