On opening day in June 2000, pedestrians noticed that the Millennium Bridge, a steel suspension footbridge over the River Thames, was swaying most alarmingly. The bridge was immediately closed, and remained so until February 2002, so it could be stabilized. The 8 suspension cables pull with a force of 2,000 tons to support a maximum load of 5,000 people.
