Walking along the Thames today from Victoria Embankment Gardens to the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, I was amazed by the layers of monumental history everywhere. One of the first things we encountered was Cleopatra's Needle, an ancient Egyptian obelisk flanked by two sphinxes. We assumed the obelisk to be a reproduction, but it was in fact the real thing. It is almost 3,500 years old and was brought to London from Alexandria, the royal city of Cleopatra, in 1877.

Further along our walk, we encountered some of London's most iconic buildings.

We arrived at the Tower of London, which is almost 1,000 years old and a building that, well, leaves me speechless.
